About
I've spent over a decade building and being part of tech ecosystems in Canada and the SF Bay Area: hackathons, hacker houses, community programs. In 2017 I co-founded the San Francisco Augmented Reality and Computer Vision Meetup, one of the early communities around what's now a foundational layer of AI.
But honestly, I've been studying how communities organize since middle school, when I spent five years co-chairing a youth commission. At UCLA, I served in a presidential-appointed role working with hundreds of student organizations, and that's where it became real for me. When values and mission are shared, everything else is just logistics. When representatives came from across campus, we won. When they didn't, we lost ground. The communities with energy weren't just groups people belonged to. They were groups people identified with.
In 2022 I wrote about how it takes a community to raise a startup. My background in political science and public affairs (UCLA) and integrated design, business & technology (USC) is probably why I think about builder ecosystems more like infrastructure than events.
